Bukit Selambau's big day
|
Election Commission Deputy Chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar showing the 25.4 cm by 50.8 cm (10 by 20 inches) orange ballot paper which will be used in the Bukit Selambau by-election. It has all 15 candidates' name and symbols printed using the standard size and has to be folded four times before voters put it into the ballot box.
| SUNGAI PETANI (April 6, 2009) : The ballot paper for the Bukit Selambau by-election is the biggest in Malaysian election history.
Measuring 25.4cm by 50.8cm, the dark orange-coloured paper contains the names and symbols of the 15 candidates and space for voters to mark their choice.
Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the size of the fonts and symbols used were the same as those in the ballot papers of previous elections.
“We do not want to confuse voters. And the ballot paper is this big because of the number of candidates contesting in this by-election,” he said, adding that the ballot paper had to be folded four times before it could fit into the ballot box.
He predicted that with good weather, the voter turnout will be more than 80%, adding that the result will be known around 10pm.
Voters can check where to vote via SMS by typing “SPKMyKad number” and sending it to 15888, or calling the state EC office at 04-700 1313 or 04-700 1303.
He said at the Kuala Muda District Office yesterday the EC had given permits to 33 Mafrel (Malaysian for Free Elections) officers to observe the voting process.
Wan Ahmad admitted that there could be the names of deceased voters on the electoral list. “We cannot simply delete names from the list, as we do not have updated information from the Registration Department,” he said and advised the next of kin to inform the department.
He also said there were about 60 voters aged 90 and above in the constituency.
