Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah | KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 16, 2009) : Hua Zong (Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia) president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah says the government should help fund the development of independent Chinese secondary schools as they help the government educate its citizens and nurture talents.
He also urged the government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) which is awarded to students from such schools, the Chinese press reported today.
He stressed that if the country wants progress and development it should place emphasis on educating and training students.
All education units, be they independent or government schools, private colleges or public universities, as long as they help the country educate the young, they should be supported.
This is especially so if they are non-profit independent Chinese secondary schools, he said at a ceremony to unveil a statue of Chinese philosopher Confucius at the Confucian Private Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday in conjunction with the school's 103rd anniversary celebrations.
Pheng said each year the 60 independent Chinese secondary schools in the country churn out an average of 10,000 UEC holders at a hefty costof RM36 million a year.
"Several state governments have started giving out grants to independent Chinese schools, including Perak and Selangor governments, which are allocating RM400,000 and RM500,000 respectively to each of these schools in their state states.
"The Sabah government last year allocated land to independent Chinese schools in the state as a means for them to raise funds," he said adding that these cases showed that independent Chinese school eduction is gaining recognition.
He is confident that these schools can contribute even more towards nation building if they receive allocations from the federal government systematically.
Pheng, who was elected Hua Zong chief recently, welcomed the Education Ministry's initiative to hold holiday training programmes for Bahasa Malaysia teachers from independent Chinese secondary schools in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
He said for a start, 30 teachers from 10 schools will be taking part in the training programme in the coming year-end holidays.
Pheng said he hoped that apart from the teacher training programme, the government would show its concern for independent Chinese school education through other means such as the allocation of funds, and demonstrate fairness towards schools of different streams in the spirit of 1Malaysia.
