Anwar chides Umno Youth for targetting Nik Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 16, 2009)
: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang Pauh) today questioned the move by Kelantan Umno Youth to urge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate an alleged corruption case involving Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

He said the youth movement should be fair and not attack and humiliate Nik Aziz, who is well known as someone who lives a very modest life despite being mentri besar for 19 years.

"Look at his account records, his assets, his simple way of life. Even me, with my style, I believe my coat is more expensive than his (Nik Aziz) shirt.

"But, Umno Youth, with all their wealth, had haughtily and arrogantly attacked Nik Aziz, labelling him as corrupt, calling for his resignation," he said in his debate on 2010 Budget at committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Expressing surprise over the movement's action, Anwar said it was not a healthy political culture using the MACC for such an issue while there were other cases involving huge amounts of money pending investigation.

On Sunday, state Umno Youth head Anuar Sapian handed over a memorandum to MACC calling, among others, for it to investigate Nik Aziz’s admission that a certain group was sponsoring his trip to perform the haj on a VVIP package worth RM65,000.

His speech caused Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi to interject, creating an awkward situation as it was not a convention for a deputy minister or minister to interrupt another MP’s speech.

Mohd Puad said if there was nothing wrong, Nik Aziz should not have cancelled the haj trip as it would create doubts since the sponsor was allegedly a contractor who got many projects in the state.

Anwar then said Nik Aziz’s case involved a technical matter, and he decided to cancel the trip after being advised.

He then continued with his speech, touching on, among other things, the weaknesses in administration as pointed out in the Auditor-General’s Report and the oil royalty or wang ehsan for Kelantan.
