MACC must keep at it

AS the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) marked its first anniversary as a commission yesterday, the fact remains that it has little to celebrate.

  Party comes first
MCA Vice-President and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai seems to have emerged as the biggest loser in his party’s leadership crisis, but he tells Terence Fernandez and Llew-Ann Phang that the party is bigger than any individual.

  Just the facts please
MCA Youth chief and deputy education minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong tells Terence Fernandez and Llew-Ann PhanG his game plan to ward off personal, political attacks: state the truth and lay bare the facts.

    Finding freedom in music
I HAVE been engaging a piano teacher in anticipation of an upcoming recital, my first since A levels. It is great to be back at the piano, flicking through hitherto unloved books and manuscript scrawled upon more than 10 years ago, when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was still prime minister. Among my composition submissions was Variations on Negaraku, written in protest against the quick march tempo that he was so keen on. In hindsight, mine was not much better, although probably less objectionable to the public than Namewee’s.

Malaysian politics in flux: Whither democracy?
TWO years after the fateful 12th general election, Malaysians will not be faulted for being disillusioned with politics. This is despite the fact that for the first time in our nation’s political history, the ruling party has been denied the politically significant threshold of a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

The ‘peace president’ opts for more nukes
US President Barack Obama will shortly issue a Nuclear Posture Review, a task each new president must perform. The Nobel Peace Laureate must decide what to do with America’s 5,500 nuclear weapons  – enough to destroy the planet at least five times over.

  In one’s individual capacity
I RECEIVED this fax from Lok Yim Pheng, the secretary-general of the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP), on Wednesday in response to Tuesday’s column which touched on the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service’s (Cuepacs) membership of Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Negara (Perkasa); and the Cuepacs secretary-general’s remarks of an increasing female presence in the public service:

  Local elections not legally impossible
WHEN the Penang government took the country by surprise last week by asking the Election Commission (EC) to run elections in the state’s two municipal councils – something not seen in Malaysia for 45 years – all eyes inevitably turned to the prime minister for a response.

And the Sour Mango goes to ...
Dear Secretary-General of the Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and Co-operatives Ministry,

LET me refresh your memory by referring to the exchange of a series of email last December. Of course, you thought you won the battle by sealing your lips on the name of the advertising agency or agencies that produce commercials for the ministry. I did not throw in the towel after you did several about-turns after your note which among others read: "The Ministry agrees that publicity campaigns need to show results. Only then can it be justifiably said that it was money worth spending. It also goes without saying that good governance and transparency must underpin the selection process of the advertising company(s) and this is normally achievable through an open tender system. Finally, there has to be an evaluation process that will measure the outcome of these campaigns."
